| This competition can be any genre you want with 500 or less words.
However
You must start the story with this sentence: "I knew even before I heard their pounding footsteps that they were following me."
From that point onwards, you can continue it however you want. The starting sentence isn't included in the word count.
That's about it, so get started!

| Ok, here's my entry.
417 words, not counting the starting sentence.
I knew even before I heard their pounding footsteps that they were following me. I just had a gut feeling they would. And it wasn’t a good gut feeling. Even now as I walked home, I knew I was not safe. It was late at night, possibly even early morning and I was walking alone in a dark alley –a cliché place for things to go wrong. I’d been my friend’s 18th at a place not too far from home. I didn’t really want to go to a party –I’m a bit ani-social – but my close friends insisted that I come. Everyone else was obsessed with being eighteen and going out and getting drunk. I, personally, didn’t see the point. I’d left the party when my friends did but they all lived in the opposite direction or were getting picked up so I was left to walk home alone in the freezing cold with a couple of possible creeps following me. No, I told myself, they’re not creeps. They probably just live near by. Last year will never happen again… But what if it did? What if there was a reason they were following me? What if they didn’t live near by? The two people were a little older then I, in their early twenties. They’d been hanging around at the party like a bad smell, no one knew who they were. They’d kept staring at me all night, whispering to each other, occasionally smiling two of the world’s most unsettling smiles, as though they had very plans. I shuddered and my heart pumped in my chest –full of fear- as the horrifying memories of last year rushed through me: The smooth, dark, hair-rasing voice, the frightening way he called me “sweetie”, his rough, firm hold, my useless screams for help… I closed my eyes as a lone tear slid from the brim of my eye and trickled down my cheek. I heard the throaty, gruff sound of two men laughing come from behind me. I spun, the fear rising. But they weren’t behind me. They were at the corner, at the other end of the street, crossing the road. I watched as they walked across the road and disappeared behind a row of houses. Relief washed over me. I stared up at the moon. There it was, wide, bright and comforting. It was like reassurance. It was there, watching over me. Not all my fear had gone, but I continued to walk –home was not far away now, just around the corner. _________________ Come, gentle night; come, loving, black-browed night; Give me my Romeo; and, when I shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night... —Romeo and Juliet, Act III scene ii

| Ah!
Only one entry!
Okay, seeing as how it's not really a competition at the moment, I'll keep this competition open until Friday the 1st. _________________ I AM the Dark Side... I am DARTH ROSIE, the UBERLANE

| Well it might be Saturday the second but im still gonna enter!
I knew even before I heard their pounding footsteps that they were following me. Thousands of them. I had to stay still. If i moved now then that was it: I was gone.
The Palace soldiers were hunting me. I had stolen from the King and Queen after all. They weren't going to be very happy with me.
I was hiding in a cupboard, waiting for this platoon to keep moving. They were scaling the place, searching every nook and cranny. But the Princess had ordered that they didn't search this cupboard. I'm not entirely sure why. There was nothing that great in here, just a pile of books and some jewelry. I helped myself to some of that as well.
No matter what you may believe, I wasn't a common theif. I had to steal from here. It was part of my job. I was part of a rebel faction in the southern province of Tellias. The King and Queen ruled with an iron fist. Not caring about the villagers, not caring about anybody but themselves. They deserved to be stolen from. I was stealing from them to help the people living in Tellias. In the southern Province the King and Queen did less than not care for us. They pretended we weren't there. Because of this, we had the strongest Rebel Faction in the country.
The Guards finally moved. I breathed a sigh of relief and took my hand of the dagger at my hip. I carefully moved out of the cupboard and snuck toward the window. I was on the third floor of the castle but I could easily get down from here. I was about to jump onto the window ledge when a hand grabbed my arm. I reacted and pulled my dagger out and held it to the throat of the person holding my arm. One of the guards had waited behind and was now at the mercy of my dagger. He had't acted very smartly.
"HE'S IN HERE!" Yelled the guard. They were unfortunate last words but he gave me no choice. The gaurds were once again coming. I knew once again, even before I heard their pounding footsteps that they were following me. And there was no way that they would stop. I had to get out now.
Only 385 words but I don't think it's to bad! _________________ If fate is a wheel, we are the cogs that drive it. We make the wheel turn.-Rukia Kuchiki

| Oh thank GOD! Someone else entered!
These two stories are both fantastic, and both really different. Similar in ways, but you have both done really well and I can't choose a winner!
Okay...firstly,
Vampire - excellent descriptive language and fanstastic suspense.
Raison - great action, and we all know I love cliffhangers!
So...
On the basis of that...
You are joint winners! Hooray! _________________ I AM the Dark Side... I am DARTH ROSIE, the UBERLANE
